Managing your museum in economically challenging times

A presentation by David Fleming, Director of National Museums Liverpool  Tuesday 25 August,  2pm- 4pm at the Marae, Te Papa, Wellington.

About the presentation David will be talking about managing museums in tough financial times. Or perhaps that should be 'in times that are tougher than usual’! He says:Modern, inclusive museums mustn’t cut back on their activities just because budgets are being squeezed. In some cases, they’ll simply have to work harder. Increasing admission fees and commercial activities is not the ultimate solution, because although making money is important, it’s not what museums are for. Being clear about what museums are for – and making sure we’re focused on the same thing – is the best way of coping with hard times.

About the presenter Since David Fleming’s arrival at National Museums Liverpool in 2001 he has supervised the completion of two major capital projects: the £45 million ‘Into The Future’ project, which included major refurbishment in the Walker Art Gallery and World Museum Liverpool, and most recently the opening of the new International Slavery Museum. He is currently overseeing the creation of the new £72 million Museum of Liverpool. Since he became Director of National Museums Liverpool, audiences have more than trebled, rising from around 700,000 per year to more than 2.7 million. Read more about David.
National Services Te Paerangi in partnership with the Wellington Museums Trust have brought David to New Zealand for the New Zealand Diversity Forum.
