Do you have a great museum project suitable for graduates for the Museum Graduate Internship Programme (MGIP?
MGIP is a National Services Te Paerangi (NSTP) initiative that enables a recent graduate to work on a project at a museum, guided by a mentor from the museum staff. MGIP aims to provide museums with trained personnel (the interns) who will bring in new knowledge and complete a specified short-term project at the museum. In turn this provides the graduates with the opportunity to take up practical projects in museums. A win-win situation!
Suggested internship projects might be: documentation of a particular collection or the planning of a forthcoming exhibition. This year two to four internships will be available (dependant on length on internships).
- Does your museum have a project but has limited resources and can't hire staff to complete it?
- Is the project 2-3 months in length and collection or curatorial based?
- Is there a suitably skilled senior staff member that can be the graduate's mentor?
- And, can you offer support for the graduate such as low cost or free accommodation, travel expenses, contribution towards the intern’s stipend?
If this sounds like your museum, then please continue reading!
Attached below is the MGIP criteria and application form. If you would like to apply read the criteria, fill in the application form and return it to luciep@tepapa.govt.nz by 5pm Wednesday 24 February 2010. Late applications will not be considered.

Application form 2009/10

Museum criteria
For a museum to be eligible to apply for an MGIP intern, it must meet these four criteria:
- The museum has limited resources (financial and staffing) and could not hire staff for the project.
- A project exists that is suitable for a recent museum studies graduate to complete, which will take from 2-3 months from start to finish.
- A suitably skilled senior staff member is available every day for the duration of the project to be the on-site mentor.
- Able and prepared to assist the intern with low cost or free accommodation, travel expenses, and a contribution towards the intern’s stipend.
If your museum meets the criteria above, you qualify to apply for an intern through the contestable process. Preference will be given to museums that didn’t have an intern in 2008/09. If you applied previously but were unsuccessful and wish to re-submit your previous application, please discuss it with us first. For queries, contact Lucie Paterson, luciep@tepapa.govt.nz or 04 381 7114 or freephone 0508 678 743. Late applications will not be considered. You will be contacted if further information is required once the applications have been assessed. Museums will be advised of the outcome by the 17 March 2010, if not before.
