The Waitomo District Long Term Council Community Plan 2006-2016 (incorporating the Annual Plan 2006/2007) was adopted by Council on 27th June 2006.

The main purpose of the Annual Plan is to provide updated financial information on the budget and rates for the 2008-2009 year, and to offer the community the opportunity to help determine where and how the budget is spent.

This plan applies to air in the whole of the Northland region, excluding the coastal marine area. The plan identifies the significant air quality issues and sets out policies and rules so that these will be managed. Air quality in the coastal marine area is managed through the Regional Coastal Plan for Northland.

The purpose of the Regional Coastal Plan is to assist the Northland Regional Council, in conjunction with the Minister of Conservation, to promote the sustainable management of resources in the coastal marine area.

One of the main purposes of the RPS is to provide for the integrated management of Northland's natural and physical resources. This means considering the environment as a whole and recognising that changes, or the effects of human activities, in one area or on one resource, can affect other resources.

The Plan identifies the significant water and soil issues faced by Northlanders and seeks to address these through the policies and rules. It also proactively promotes a programme of environmental education, advocacy, information provision and advice.

The 10-year Plan  2006-16 is Council's main planning document. It details the activities Council intends to carry out over the next ten years, how much these activities will cost, and how they will be funded.

Under the Local Government Act 2002 (LGA) the community outcomes are required to be reviewed every six years. Key stakeholder organisations in the District were involved in August 2007 in workshops (both a general one and a Maori specific one) to review the current community outcomes.

The Council is required by the Local Government Act 2002 to prepare a Long Term Council Community Plan (LTCCP) for the District. The plan identifies the directions or outcomes the community desires and the role of Council in achieving those outcomes.

The idea of developing a single resource management plan combining the regional policy statement and regional plans began some four years ago. The idea was not simply about joining the existing plans together, it was underpinned by the vision of a plan that was simple, comprehensive, focused on what was important and, most significantly, focused on results.

The Department of Conservation works to a range of plans, strategies and agreements which set out goals, actions and directions for management work and strategic directions.

The SHAW model involves facilitating regular community forums on topics of focus to identify and address areas of need within the community.

There are many stories to tell in The Catlins. Interpretation aims to tell some of these stories in ways that are relevant to the visitor.  Interpretation panels and offsite interpretation will assist in educating visitors on the appropriate behaviour while visiting the many sites within the Catlins and give them a sense of being part of preserving this unique area. 

The Interpretation Plan provides a framework for the interpretation of the Catlins for the 10 years 2007-2017.

These Toolkits were developed as 'how-to guides' to assist local governments, arts, cultural and heritage organizations with the processes of cultural planning and cultural mapping, and the development of public art projects and programs.  The Toolkits were produced by the Creative City Network of Canada in partnership with 2010 Legacies Now and the Department of Canadian Heritage.
