When Council sought the community's aspirations for the district and the priorities of actions over the next 10 years back in 2003, one of the concerns raised was the need to protect heritage sites from inappropriate development and population pressure.

The community's preferred outcome was to see heritage valued and celebrated and to be an integral part of Central's identity.

Council has endorsed a destination management approach for Central Otago.  Destination management is essentially about communities and cross agency co-operation in areas of planning and environmental management, provision of visitor information centres, management of infrastructure, marketing and site management. 

Under the Local Government Act 2002, Council is required to put together a Long Term Plan every three years. The Long Term Plan sets out our priorities in the medium to longer term.

The purpose of community visioning days is to develop a shared vision for the future for each of the district's townships or clusters of townships.

The outcomes, with the over-riding outcome of sustainable growth management, represent the desires of our communities and provide a solid framework for ensuring that we protect and preserve what is important to the people of this district.

A community plan covers the council and communities' shared vision for the future.  It allows the council to align its activities and priorities with those of the community.

Cemeteries are an integral part of the social fabric of Wellington and their management and amenity should reflect the sense of history and the memorial role they play.

The purpose of the Rural Community Plan is to spell out important Horokiwi issues, provide a vision for the area's future and identify steps in achieving that vision.

This plan is about capturing and putting down in writing community aspirations for Makara.

The Plans intention was to give the people of Ohariu Valley the chance to spell out the things they held to be important about their area, and their vision for the future of that area. The Community Plan records those values and aspirations which make up that vision.

The vision for the Kapiti Coast's future is an exciting one and each community on the Coast has its own view of the flavour and colour of that future.

The Local Outcome Statements here aim to provide a framework or touchstone for options and actions for the future as local communities and the wider District evolve over time.

Urban development projects in the town centres of Kapiti are being carried out in line with public wishes, as identified in the Long Term Council Community Plan.
