The Auckland Writers & Readers Festival was created in 1999 by a committed group of writers and book lovers eager for an Auckland festival of ideas celebrating books and reading.

The Cultural Heritage Inventory (CHI) is a computer database that stores and retrieves information on historic and cultural heritage within the Auckland region.

To promote an integrated and strategic approach to Open Space planning, the eight councils in the Auckland region together with the Department of Conservation and the Ministry for the Environment have developed a Regional Open Space Strategy.

Auckland City has a critical role in both providing open space and fostering community and recreational activity to strengthen communities. Council recognises that the provision of public land and buildings plays a vital role in the successful functioning of recreational and community groups. This policy will guide council's provision of leases to such groups.

As part of its role in the preservation, protection and conservation of valued features of the city's physical environment, the district plan identifies certain individual buildings, groups of buildings, objects and places as being significant and worthy of protection in the public interest.
