• Protection, conservation and use - Wellington's unique character is enhanced by the protection, conservation and use of its built heritage
• Sustainable economic use - Wellington's built heritage is acknowledged as contributing to a vibrant economy.

Open space is an integral part of managing the shape of Wellington. On a large scale it contains the urban environment accentuating the identity of Wellington. On a smaller scale it interweaves the natural and the built environments creating a more liveable city. Council uses open space to shape the urban form of the city.

Cemeteries are an integral part of the social fabric of Wellington and their management and amenity should reflect the sense of history and the memorial role they play.

The Community Directory is a comprehensive list of community-based groups and organisations in Wellington.

This Policy has been developed to assist the Council in making decisions about community facilities. These facilities are not just about buildings and space but are focal points for community activities. In this way they play a critical part in strengthening Wellington's communities.

The Council supports a wide range of cultural and artistic activity in Wellington. The aim is to foster a lively and creative city that offers rich and varied cultural experiences to residents and visitors.

The purpose of developing a Cultural Strategy is so that the Council can fulfil its role to facilitate Wellington's expression of itself, that is, to maintain and develop the city's identity for the people who live in and visit Wellington.

Every year Wellington city hosts a wide range of events, including concerts, sporting matches, live theatre and dance, exhibitions and festivals. The Council supports many of these events through grants, event coordination, and promotional activities.

The purpose of the Wellington City Council's International Relations Policy is to establish links with the world in order to contribute to the social and economic wellbeing of the city.

The policy shows how library services contribute to the vision and outcomes for Wellington as set out in Council's Strategic Plan, particularly in the delivery of education, information and recreation services.

The policy is designed to encourage reserve users to develop a respect for and an understanding of each others needs and rights. The policy recognises that there is a place for mountain biking on reserve land, but that this does not need to be at the expense of other activities.

This policy sets the direction for the Council's involvement in museums services and provides a framework for its continued contribution to museums in Wellington.
