Long Term Council Communtiy Plan.

Whakatane District Council recently launched the Built Heritage Research Study. The study will provide quality information about heritage buildings in Whakatane thereby ensuring that they are managed in such a way that will help put Whakatane on the map.

Community outcomes are a desired state or ideal that the community identifies and believes is important for its present and future wellbeing. Under the Local Government Act 2002, councils are required to facilitate a process to identify the desired community outcomes and priorities for their communities once every six years.

The Whakatane District Sister Cities Association has two Sister City relationships - one with Kamagaya in Japan and the other with Warwick in Australia.  It also has a Friendship Agreement with Kita Tachibana (now Shibukawa City) in Japan. 

The Long Term Council Community Plan is a document that sets out the direction for the district for the next ten years.

The Rural Playground Scheme contributes towards the provision of playground equipment for the development of playgrounds in communities where the Council does not have available reserve land.

The Rural Travel Fund helps rural sports and school teams with young people between 5 and 19 with transport costs to participate in their regular sports competitions.  This Fund is provided by SPARC and administered by the Whakatane District Council.

The Whakatane Community Board Discretionary fund privides financial assistance for local initiatives that benefit the communities within that community board area.

The ‘Artisans Fair' is unique to Whangarei. A specialist summer attraction, the fair is a market for local Artisans to showcase their fine arts, crafts and skills to our increasingly cosmopolitan community.

Any person is eligible for nomination, who by their personal leadership, inspiration, sacrifice or devotion to a cause, has made a significant contribution to the community wellbeing of the Whangarei District.

The implementation of the strategy covered by this item will have significant cultural benefits by providing an offroad network that will give users an alternative means of recreation and access to their community, than can be obtained from the road. The work may affect sites of Maori cultural or spiritual significance.

The Whangarei District Council has traditionally assisted community organisations, clubs and groups with a wide range of community development projects, capital development projects, social service and programme delivery. The council provides operational funding for a number of key arts and cultural organisations, sports and recreation organisations, grants to community halls and resident and ratepayer groups and loans for developments on reserve land or for recreational facility developments.

The Local Government Act 2002 requires every district council to produce, once every three years, a Long Term Council Community Plan (or more simply, ‘Community Plan') which sets out what the council will do for at least the next ten years - the fi rst three in detail and the remaining seven years as an overview.

This Positive Ageing Strategy outlines the projects, large and small, that the Council undertakes to deliver to the districts older people so as to support their wellbeing and help improve their quality of life
