Cultural well-being strategies and policies

Our District is one of the fastest growing areas in New Zealand. Our challenge is to grow and develop in a way that maintains and improves the quality of life we enjoy, today and in the future.
This means taking a long-term view of the social, environmental, cultural and economic aspirations of all communities across our District.

This 2006 - 2016 plan is the first LTCCP to be audited under the LGA 2002 and is intended to be a comprehensive statement of the Councils intentions for the next 10 years.

In response to proactive community residents submissions in 2004, a multi partner project team was established to engage with those communities on their future aspirations. The way this was done was through Vision Café's.

The Local Government Act, 2002, brought major changes in the way that Local Bodies operate and the way they interact with the communities they represent. Great emphasis is put on requirements for Councils to be guided by the aspirations and needs of the local community and to ensure that they truly understand what those aspirations and needs really are.  One piece of this picture is the generation of this Long Term Council Community Plan, (LTCCP)

Architect Noel Welford has drawn a concept plan incorparating sports, recreation, and community needs.  The concept incorporates covered lap pool and spa, sports stadium, gymnasium, community lounge and kitchen, cafe, and library.

Under the Local Government Act 2002 (LGA) the community outcomes are required to be reviewed every six years. Key stakeholder organisations in the District were involved in August 2007 in workshops (both a general one and a Maori specific one) to review the current community outcomes.

The 10-year Plan  2006-16 is Council's main planning document. It details the activities Council intends to carry out over the next ten years, how much these activities will cost, and how they will be funded.

The Council has now adopted its Long-Term Council Community Plan (LTCCP) 2006-2016. Council has been consulting with the Wairoa Community to identify what they would like the district to look like in the future.

The strategy has an overarching aim to improve opportunities for older people to participate in the community in the ways that they choose.

The strategy vision is:

"For Wairoa to be a safe, healthy and enjoyable place to walk and cycle, giving a form of transport to compliment both commuting and outdoor lifestyles."
